Fruitprofits: your berry expert
Berry quality and postharvest technology
The consumption of berries is growing worldwide at a very high rate. Their taste, convenience, and good health properties are pushing this growth
Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries market is growing yearly at 10-15% in Europe and North America and the trend continues. Strawberries are also growing steadily at slower pace though.
Berries are highly perishable fruits, with a limited shelf life. Shelf life of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries ,at optimum temperature, is at most 6-7 days. Blueberries will not last more than 2-3 weeks. And everyday that passes they lose quality.
Also there is a multitude of varieties in the market, each with its own specifications and quality characteristics.
In order to arrive successfully in the market, many aspects of the value chain need to work in coordination: healthy harvest conditions, right harvest criteria, fast cooling, proper packaging, fast logistics from production to consumption at the right temperature.
Unfortunately, berries often do not arrive in good quality condition. In Europe an estimated 20% of berries harvested are thrown away. Many are downgrade in quality and sold at a lower price for a loss...
